CABPS ELECTS NEW PRESIDENT
The Canadian Association of Bariatric Physicians and Surgeons (CABPS) elected Dr. Mehran Anvari of Hamilton as its President on September 16, 2011. Dr. Anvari was previously the Association’s Vice President and Treasurer.
Dr. Anvari earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degree at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK, in 1983, completed his residency in general surgery at McMaster University in Hamilton in 1989 and was awarded a PhD by the University of Adelaide, Australia in 1996. He holds a Fellowship in General Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada (1989), the American College of Surgeons (1996) and the American Gastroenterological Association (2008), and is an Honourary Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. He has earned over 20 awards; most recently he was presented with the ORION Leadership Award by the Ontario Research and Innovation Optical Network and Innovator of the Year by McMaster. His achievements have also been recognized by the governments of Ontario and Canada.
Dr. Anvari is Professor of Surgery in McMasters’ Faculty of Health Sciences and a faculty member in that university’s Graduate Program in Medical Sciences. He is the Medical Director of the Bariatric Centre of Excellence at St. Joseph’s Hospital, which is the leading such centre in Ontario. He is the Chair and Clinical Lead of the Ontario Bariatric Network, editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Medical Robotics and Computer-Assisted Surgery, scientific director and CEO for the Centre for Surgical Invention and Innovation, and the founding director of the Centre for Minimal Access Surgery. As a practicing surgeon, he personally performs close to 150 bariatric surgeries each year.
Dr. Anvari’s interest in minimally invasive surgery and robotics has resulted in inventions for which he has received seven patents or provisional patents. He is a leader in the fields of telementoring and telerobotic surgery, and numbers them among his extensive list of basic and clinical research interests. His interest in metabolic surgery dates back to his PhD thesis, and he has done considerable research on the impact of gastric surgery and hormonal control of GI and endocrine function. In 2006, he initiated research into the surgical treatment of type 2 diabetes.
